Right now, instead of seeing #Blue Scholars LIVE at the Fillmore, I am home working on a Board memo. What is wrong with me? (“…And now you tryna to change the world when your home is a mess…Got your priorities mixed huh, you failin’ the test”)

"the Northwest fills the lungs; heals the pain in my chest…"

"Live from occupied Duwamish territory
Where Carlos Bulosan once lived to tell the story
Of the brain, sweat, and glory of mic checks and men
Who fight the destination we were destined to end”

"(We’re) broke but not broken,
cold but not frozen,
Lost but not forgotten,
Kickin’ the doors open"

'Occupy' protests across the country are promising, though often deaf to the issues facing people of colour.

Blue Scholars- “Back Home”

Blue Scholars has some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard. My favorite lines from the song-
“And somewhere a soldier kissed his family goodbye
And he was walking like a warrior the water in his eyes
He left in late September said he’ll be back in July
Now the child is asking mommy “Why did daddy have to die?”
She says he fought for freedom, but she knows it’s just a lie
‘Cause her father was a veteran with benefits denied
Now the fire in her eyes burn brighter with the passin’ of the minutes into hours and the hours into days and
Days turned to night, nights turned to face the other way “

“So next time you see recruiters in your school or your crib
Tell ‘em thank you for the offer but you’d rather you lived
We got more than just our bodies to offer
So fuck a coffin wrapped in red, white, and blue, withdraw passed due
We disgusted with the fact we pay taxes to build tanks
Still dropping one twomp and a half to fill tanks
Got a china-mans chance to fill banks like Phil Banks
For soldiers in the future givin’ thanks in advance we say”

In case you didn’t know Blue Scholars is a hip hop duo based in Seattle, Washington, created in 2002 while the members, DJ Sabzi and MC Geologic, were students at the University of Washington. Their music and lyrics frequently focus on struggles between socioeconomic classes, challenging authority and youth empowerment. The duo consists of vocalist Geologic, the son of Filipino immigrants, and the Iranian-American DJ, Sabzi.
