Still got love for Rickey.

Hooray for our teams — the bay — our home. “Romo seemed to embrace the meaning of playing in the Bay Area. Fans want to win, but they also want their heroes to respect what it means to play here, to understand our values and beliefs and history.”

Goodness. I love this photo. Many people don’t know how much direct services the Black Panthers provided in Oakland communities. Pancake breakfasts and food drives along with revolutionary songs and slogans.

On a dreary, drizzly Oakland evening, the 2nd annual Bacon Tuesday sponsored by Jeff Francoeur went down, all stemming from Frenchy tossing a baseball wrapped in a $100 bill to be used for the purchase of pork products last season.

I think I can now officially forgive Jeff Francoeur for his past OBP transgressions and freely admit that I am a rabid Francoeur supporter. Click through for the whole video

This is a most awesome story, even (maybe) if you don’t like baseball. Backstory is that the Oakland fans are incredibly upbeat and supportive, even though beleaguered by the team threatening to move, a lousy stadium set up, and a non-contending team year after year. Also, multicultural. Coda to the story is Francouer bought them all bacon pizzas Wednesday during a tedious and stadium-clearing rain delay.

This totally made me grin and tear up a little at the same time. Joy of baseball! Love to Jeff Francoeur! Let’s Go Oakland! Bacon Tuesdays!

The Town Game

“The city of Oakland has a rich, firmly established basketball history, steeped in tradition and lore found in few other places. Oakland has forged a well-deserved reputation as a source of basketball royalty blessed with prodigious talent. It began with the legendary Bill Russell – perhaps the greatest winner in team sports history – and is populated by a who’s who of NBA stars past and present. Jason Kidd, Gary Payton, Paul Silas, Brian Shaw and Antonio Davis – among many others – have followed in Russell’s worn footsteps, but their success is just a part of the story.
